For almost two months Nave 16 of Matadero Madrid is playing host to the works making up Project Juárez: 14 artists have worked in Ciudad Juárez to create the works now exhibited in museums or on the Internet.

Ciudad Juárez has undergone a social transformation over the last few decades. What used to be an attractive destination because it offered employment in the stock farming and cotton industries has changed radically with the incorporation of a textile assembly industry, the beginning of the war against drug trafficking and increasing numbers of unpunished murders of women. The result now is a massive exodus and a strong military presence, with employment opportunities for young people reduced to those assembly plants, the ranks of the police and organised crime.

This is where Project Juárez was born, as a reflection on forms of domination and discrimination interested in exploring the relationship between the construction of masculinity, the exercise of violence and forms of vertical power. The selection of artists for the Project corresponds to an approach to the gender issue from a male viewpoint (understanding masculinity as the set of attributes traditionally associated with this role: strength, virility, triumph, bravery, security and competition).

From 2006 to 2007, residence in Ciudad Juárez was established for 14 artists, who went there to live and work. They were offered a high level of flexibility in time and format, generating a huge diversity of perspectives and methods. The artists are Carlos Amorales, Gustavo Artigas, Artemio, Democracia, Eván Edeza, Enrique Jeik, Ramón Mateos, Joshua Okón, Antonio de la Rosa and Santiago Sierra. The results of their experiences are exhibited in museum galleries, while others have been developed on the Internet. From 17 September to 13 November, thanks to the curator Mariana David, we can see them in Nave 16 of Matadero Madrid.

Project Juárez has been an initiative of El Palacio Negro A.C.
