IDYS BETA. DO IT YOURSELF INSTITUTE / Everything for praxis
Using DIY/DIT (Do It Yourself / Do It Together) methodology for self-management and self-production, a tool may be established for generating an open-code city model.
IDYS is built on a laboratory model for testing and developing prototypes with the aim of promoting research and experimental processes linked to citizen initiatives. Its aim is to generate a community that shares a collaborative learning environment and the exchange of knowledge, thus promoting co-responsibility amongst citizens and self-management of common ground.
The Institute, for the initial beta phase, will be located at Intermediae where a stable head-office will be established. For this purpose, we will have a space with an evolutional character where we will work on defining projects, and also models for developing, managing and financing them. We will begin three initiatives to get the office going, which will allow us to test and assess the proposal through these initial start-ups: an assessment space for starting up and developing prototypes, a weekly open workshop to be used by citizens for experimenting, and the start-up of a website that will work as an interface for the physical project, an exchange tool and a place for sharing information. There will also be areas on it for exchanging resources, information and services: Time bank, knowledge bank, resources bank.
Opening hours for activities:
- IDYS Beta Assessment Consultancy for starting up and developing prototypes, every Tuesday from 4 February to 11 March from 4 to 8pm in Nave 16.3 at Matadero Madrid, in the We-Traders Project Marketplace. Swapping Recession for City
(From 18 March, its official headquarters will be at Intermediae Matadero)
- Open workshop for citizen use, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 2pm from 4 February at Intermediae Matadero. Limited numbers activity

At TXP , we have been using the self-building strategy in different contexts and different formats, whether it be for activating unused plots of land so that they can be managed by the community, recovering empty buildings linked to self-management processes or generating mobile devices for communities to use public space. Building a community that is co-responsible for decisions; that creates consensuses and makes projects its own. At the same time, citizen power is strengthened as those who are integrated into these projects increase their political strength, acquiring confidence in their own capability, designing their environment and building alternatives.
