THE REASON OF ORANGES
Ricardo Cases | Foto en la Plaza
Institution
In this series of photographs Ricardo Cases takes oranges, a symbol of Levante, as a starting point in order to create a narrative line that helps him to portray its idiosyncrasy.
Orange is the thread that runs through the work, and also a tool that serves to capture scenes of the aesthetic, political and economic landscape of this territory. Light and colour, so important in Cases’ photographs, share the focus of this series alongside the absurd humour that the images bring out. El porqué de las naranjas (The reason of oranges) is a series of 65 photographs of which 19 are shown here.
Foto en la Plaza is the name given to the series of photography exhibitions on tarpaulin, put up on the scaffold structures in Plaza Matadero. Ricardo Cases (Orihuela, 1971) lives and works between Madrid and Valencia. He has shown his work in solo shows in arts centres such as Arts Santa Mónica in Barcelona and Photobook Museum in Cologne. In addition he has taken part in group shows at Mola, Los Angeles; Le Bal, Paris; La Casa Encendida, Madrid; Photo España 2008 and the Instituto Cervantes in Milan among others. He has also published several photobooks among which can be found El porqué de las naranjas (Mack Books, 2014).
