Tengo tantas personalidades que, cuando te digo “te quiero”, no sé si es verdad is a play that aims to capture the essence of the numerous and varied writings of an author as prolific and consequential as Max Aub, a man of letters whose works run the entire literary gamut: novels, plays, stories, poems, journals and a body of literature that defies easy classification.
Naturally, to do justice to the scope of the author’s ideas we would need to stage a production that was many hours long –which we aren’t going to do– or for one of his works to be staged in Spain every year. As we all know, however, both poison and perfume come is small flasks. Aub, like so many others, was driven by strange and colossal forces, as if he were a ball buffeted ‘here and there’. As so many do, he also had the good fortune –perhaps– to play a variety of roles as a civilian. Taking elements ‘from here and there’, we will create a collage (an ensemble of diverse elements with a unified tone) similar in nature to a literary cabaret, where music and painting, the arts that he so loved, will have a heavy presence. An always surprising and unexpected Max, for whom culture is not a luxury but rather one of society’s basic requirements.
