A Journey through Knowledge

This exhibition is part of Library: Geographic History of an Idea, a project in which Casa del Lector presents major libraries from around the world at its headquarters in Madrid. The initiative began in 2014 with The National Library of Israel.
In 2016 Casa del Lector continues to explore the definition of a library. This time round it aims to address the library as a journey through knowledge, with an interactive digital exhibition of the important collection held at the National Library of Portugal.
Thanks to an interactive application designed exclusively for this exhibition, visitors will start their journey in the port of Lisbon, moving down the Atlantic coast of Africa and continuing on to India before arriving in China, Japan and the Moluccas.
Rather than focusing mainly on past historical events, this exhibition aims to provide visitors with a unique, visually attractive bibliographic testimony of a collective journey in search of knowledge, with a return voyage full of new developments and surprises. These include encounters with other cultures, the discovery of an unsuspected natural world, unknown religions and new art forms, in addition to, as Pedro Nunes wrote, “a new sky and new stars”.
