Frinje Madrid is a performing arts festival organised by the Teatro Español in Matadero Madrid. Its fifth event is due to be held from 1 to 17 July.   Frinje16 backs a wide variety of views in contemporary creativity and encourages participants to tackle political and social reality from a "stranger's" perspective, lighting up the shadowy areas of an era marked by the speed at which change happens. To do this, Frinje seeks to devise an eclectic programme that can hold – through fragmentation – numerous accounts of our time.   While the festival is on, it plans to run a series of performing arts laboratories aimed at theatre lovers and young professionals alike. Some of them are designed to bring theatre closer to audiences who wouldn't normally go and watch it, enabling them to access the cast of international creatives who have earned a reputation for their innovative artistic production and fostering the search for new approaches.   The artistic committee with the task of assessing and selecting the proposals for taking part in Frinje16 comprised Marion Betriu, artistic coordinator of Frinje Madrid; Marcia Dias, artistic director of the Rio de Janeiro Tempo Festival and producer; José Manuel Mora, playwright and artistic coordinator of Frinje Madrid; Tiago Rodrigues, creative and artistic director of D. Maria II National Theatre in Lisbon, and José Antonio Sánchez, tenured professor, researcher and author of numerous critical texts on the performing arts.   It's true that we don't know what the theatre of the future will be like, but Frinje's ambition is to be the breeding ground for nurturing the seedlings of new (and therefore uncertain) artistic projects that challenge our social and political reality.   PROGRAMME
Past   In this itinerary, Frinje16 brings together work by various companies looking back and reflecting on the construction of our present: a series of journeys into our most intimate and personal memories to help us understand our roots and social change. In these pieces, creative artists question their identity – both personal and collective – by transforming biographical material into performance material.

Present

In this itinerary, Frinje16 combines performances by companies who question contemporary lifestyles – their vices and fears – from multidisciplinary viewpoints such as dance and music, with a dose of humour. These pieces give us a broad and complex view of the landscape surrounding us, one that can show us the lights and shadows of a slippery present from which the human has been banished.

Future   In this itinerary, a dialogue is set up by performances that construct possible and unsettling futures. Their creators employ utopias and dystopias as performance devices to unravel the inner workings of our present. A journey to the future that calls on us to think again about the life we live today. A trip into the darkness and uncertainty of a time that, perhaps, is yet to come.

New Audiences   This itinerary includes unusual experiences that set out to stimulate the imaginations of adults and children alike, plus workshops on music and expression designed especially for young children. The overall approach is intended to foster the future of theatre and reach out to new audiences.

Processes   As in previous years, and in addition to its exhibition programme, Frinje16 wants to be a place for theatre training and discussion by running an international performing arts theory and practice workshop programme. Participants share their working processes with festival audiences.

See programme   Music   Once again this year, Frinje16 will be featuring music, including unplugged and small format concerts – a good way of dealing with the July heat and enjoying summer nights.
