A dinner party turned into an adventurous ride through the dimensions of macro- and microcosms. A feast of ephemeral beauty. Arte Povera 2.0. Evocative Baroque still lives of the 21st century. An open-heart stage operation. Welcome to Deep Dish, the transformative work of the Liquid Loft dance company. This group was founded by one of Austria’s most important choreographers, Chris Haring (who had previously worked with DV8 Physical Theatre or the Nikolais / Luis Dance Cie) together with musician Andreas Berger, dancer Stephanie Cumming and playwright Thomas Jelinek. In their performances and installations, Liquid Loft blends contemporary dance with other forms of contemporary art (visual arts, sound environment and musical composition), thereby creating cohesive and all-embracing works of art. Their idiosyncratic visual and formal language, their distinctive acoustic stage-sets and their choreographic quality have earned them international recognition and awards, such as the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale.

In Deep Dish, which premiered at Tanzquartier Wien in 2013, a society driven by longing and curiosity, flamboyantly but also callously celebrates its own transience in the manifold dimensions of reality. Live images taken with a handheld, directed by the performers and projected onto a giant screen, lead the audience through bizarre parallel worlds of organic objects. In this still-life, all movement and human behaviour is inexorably absorbed by the opulence of nature. “Making a broccoli dance can induce the same tranquillity as a dancer raising her arms. The production doesn’t address whether it’s good or it’s bad, but it does remind us that everything is ephemeral. Beauty is our only hope, both in life and on the stage”, Chris Haring tells us. As in the novel Locus Solus (by Raymond Roussel), in which the polymath Martial Canterel guides his invitees through different landscapes, one encounters in Deep Dish the beauty and the decadence of human existence. With the collaboration of artist Michel Blazy, the garden is an expression of the human striving for control and their futile escapes from their own transience, but also an image of growth and proliferation that constantly leads to the development of something new.

“The idea of the garden has been a central theme in art for thousands of years. It is about human beings who in some way or another are playing at being God in relation to nature. In the work of Michel Blazy, beauty emerges in the smallest detail through organic processes that are time-consuming and which at the same time are advancing toward their own annihilation. Dance is transitory also, and takes place in the moment, only to quickly disappear. We rehearsed for a whole year and what remains of the production is only a fraction of what in the end only exists in the spectator’s memory. The fact that everything will disappear one day can do nothing about it, but Blazy’s work removes all fear of death”, says Haring.
