Las Naves del Español

Research in the performing arts is one of the cornerstones of the project, through the Naves del Español

As the motor which drives and renovates the foundations of life, creation associated with the world of the performing arts has a major ally in Matadero Madrid.

This new space, which is managed by the Teatro Español and was designed by stage designer Jean Guy Lecat, is the product of the close cooperation between Lecat and Mario Gas, the Teatro Español’s director, Francisco Fontanals -its technical director- and architect Emilio Esteras. The space consists of a highly flexible set of three interconnected spaces which can operate independently.

Warehouse 12 is the foyer or entrance hall of the space, a reception area and cafeteria allowing small-scale shows to be staged also.

Warehouse 11 houses the stage itself, which has been designed with great flexibility and versatility in mind. The seating, stage and theatre equipment allow multiple configurations, from conventional theatre to more adventurous formats.

Warehouse 10 houses the other services and facilities: dressing rooms, workshops and offices. It is accessed via the space between the warehouses and will be equipped with areas to support training, debate, reflection and rehearsals of new productions.

The new stage centre, which occupies 5,900 m2, opened on 28 June 2007 with the première of Rise and Fall of the City of Mahogany by Bertold Brecht and Kurt Weil, directed by Mario Gas.
