Matadero Madrid opens the 2 x 1 project by presenting the latest works of two groups who have made a name for themselves on the Madrid scene: mmmm... and Los Torreznos. The proposal combines several artistic disciplines and activities which overlap each other in time. The visual and performance arts will occupy the Abierto X Obras area and the Vestíbulo (Entrance hall), with two installations, live presentations and performances. With no fixed schedule, in future editions 2 x 1 will continue to showcase groups and artists based in Madrid.
2 x 1 Las Fronteras is a project by Los Torreznos which was born on the Russia‑Norway border separating the towns of Nikel (Russia) and Kirkenes (Norway), home to the unique Arctic Hot Festival, to which the Madrid group was invited to be artists in residence. The installation consists of eight exercises/performances especially designed to be recorded on video, in which the concept of limit – physical, political and artistic – is explored in various situations. The presence of the border is a constant in the life of the Norwegian town. The work is presented for the first time in Matadero Madrid in the form of a multi‑channel installation with eight big screens occupying the old cold store of the former slaughterhouse.
Los Torreznos is made up of Rafael Lamata and Jaime Vallaure, who define themselves as "a tool for communicating social and political attitudes and the most deep-rooted customs". Their work, which is mostly audiovisual and performance based, is accessible to all and is oriented towards experimentation with simple forms such as gesture, language, and presence, always using humour and day‑to‑dayness as their cornerstone.
