Rodrigo García has been said to be an “author of texts which explode like bombs”. Born in Argentina in 1964 but resident in Spain from an early age, he is also a video-artist, performer and stage director. He is an atypical creator who combines elements of the past with the popular culture of today in his works. With his company, La Carnicería Teatro, he has developed a surprising theatrical language which encompasses the ideas and emotions which are driving the new theatrical generation. “I was travelling by AVE and, as always, I had taken off my shoes and glasses. Through the train window I saw a cemetery at 200 kph and I put my glasses on to appreciate the graves and, what do you know, it was a real estate development and I was really disappointed. You choose the cigarette which gives you cancer. Not all cigarettes give you cancer; it’s THIS cigarette that I’m lighting now which gives me cancer. It’s me who chooses the cigarette and the moment when I light up my demise. I realized last Saturday; I said «this is the cigarette which is going to kill me; I can throw it away now or carry on as I am…» But I decided to finish it. And enjoy starting to die. There are those who don’t finish their cigarettes; they don’t burn their lips or their finger tips and they are careful not to get smoke in their eyes. They throw half-smoked cigarettes into gutters or into a puddle on the tarmac and they go on living...”. So the director Rodrigo García (Europe Prize New Theatrical Realities2009) introduces his latest play Muerte y reencarnación en un cowboy (Death and reincarnation as a cowboy), premiered in November, 2009 at the Théâtre National de Bretagne (Rennes).
