Seven tapestries rest on the floor of the old cold store of Matadero Madrid. They represent some of the signatures of former shops of Havana with evocative names such as The Fight, Thought, No Rival Or Queen. Texts that can be read usually on the roads of this port city and on which Carlos Garaicoa (Havana, 1967) works altering its original meaning to others such as It's Everyone's Fight or The Queen Destroys Or Redeems.
End Of Silence is part of a body of work that Garaicoa began in 2006 with the intervention on photographs of havanian neon signs and land and that culminates now with the creation of this carpeted space. This dialogue with the urban space and architecture is a constant in Carlos Garaicoa’s job, whose work creates analogies on these physical structures and certain models of social organization. By deconstructing the contexts of objects, drawings, photos or videos, Garaicoa proposes new interpretations of the city, its ways of governance and a possible social change.
Caralos Garaicoa, who lives between Madrid and Havana, studied thermodynamics engineering at the Technical Institute Hermanos Gómez of Havana and painting at the Art Institute of the same city. Among his multiple international commitments, it stands out his last individual exhibitions, such as Overlapping, at the Irish Museum of Modern Art; Bienes Mostrencos, at the Museum of Modern Art of Medellin; The Amendment Is On Me, at the Grachip Stuio of Tampa, or The Point, The Line And The Plan, at the East Central Gallery of London. He has also participated on major artistic events like Venice Biennale, Documenta of Kassel, La Habana Biennale or Sao Paulo Biennale.
