Matadero Madrid invites you to participate in I, Culture, an international project based on collective creation and on exchanging knowledge through sewing and recycling.
I, Culture is an action that will take place over the course of several months in twelve cities: Berlin, Brussels, Kiev, Copenhagen, London, Madrid, Minsk, Moscow, Paris, Beijing, Tokyo and Warsaw. Volunteers and the public at large will sew pieces of a great patchwork puzzle in which the I, Culture legend will be created, following a pattern conceived by the artist Monika Jakubiak.
The collective participation and sewing work will also provide an occasion to think about manual skills’ contributions to culture and the importance of learning about and maintaining popular craft-related trades, as well as to ensure a place for them in a fast-moving technological society such as ours.
On 13 and 14 July, the volunteers will participate in a workshop led by the artist Monika Jakubiak in which they will exchange sewing-related knowledge and resources to make new creations with recycled fabrics.
On 15 July, a large action open to the general public of all ages will be held in which attendees will be able to learn simple sewing techniques and create their own pieces with the volunteers’ help. All the created pieces will be added to the great collective quilt that will be patched together from the pieces made in the different cities.
If you are interested in participating as a volunteer in I, Culture, you can write an email to talleres@mataderomadrid.org, placing the words “I, Culture” in the subject heading.
