Objectives
To bring the world of creative programming and “parametric” design to a collective of design professionals.
The course will be an introduction, starting off from “zero”, to an object-oriented program that pays special attention to the creation of generative algorithms (formal generation on the three-dimensional plane) and the visualisation of data.
The objective will be to arrive at a critical mass of knowledge that allows the alumni to continue learning, deepening their knowledge of their environment in an independent way, by taking advantage of the resources made available by the development community.
You won’t need any prior knowledge in programming languages.
Addressed to
Professionals, students, and anyone that has an interest in moving beyond first base in the world of generative algorithms.
What is Processing?
Processing is an open source program and a programming language for creating images, animations, three-dimensional models and interactive systems. It has been developed by Ben Fry and Casey Reas at MIT, and independently worked on since 2004.
Thanks to the selfless contributions of a wide community of developers, today, Processing present us with an “ecosystem” of solutions that allow us to operate in the most varied camps of digital creation, from the creation of images (pdf, jpg…) to the creation of applications for desktop, the web, tangible interfaces the creation of installations through sensors and computer vision, rapid prototyping and 3D printing, the creation of applications for the Android world etc.
More than 10,000 users, including students, artists, designers, researchers, and hobbyists use Processing to learn, for creating prototypes and/or for the final development of professional jobs.
The alumni will work on their laptops with Processing software (free and open source programming).
Contents:
D1: Introduction to the world of programming, primitive graphics and the representation of parameters.
D2: Elements of programming; conditional loops…
D3: Coloured spaces and start off exercises with algorithms and formal generation.
D4: Working with classes;
D5: Working with data “externals” – infographics and data visualisation systems.
D6: Exercise: in the creation of a corporate image by means of variable elements.
Tutor
Alfredo Calosci, Architect at the Politecnico di Milano (1999).
Since 2009 he has been associative professor of design at the Universidad de Europa, Madrid, where he has taught the subjects “Design Workshops in a Digital Environment”, “Interactive Design” and “Information Design”. Since 2008 he has collaborated with the Facoltà di Architettura di Alghero – Università di Sassari (Italy) – where he has been associate professor (“a contratto”) on the Design degree program (2008/2009, 2009/10), visiting lecturer (2012) and professor on the International Masters course “Sustainability Report” (2013) carried out in collaboration with ELISAVA. He has lived in Madrid since 1992, where he has developed a professional career as a designer.
