The in-depth analysis of Bram Stoker’s work, Dracula, makes for an unavoidable need to explore the world of contemporary neo-gothic literature. In which, the vampire and his women appear as metaphors for the rebellion of “diverse subjectivities” against historically dominant social conventions.

In this seminar we intend to highlight the ideological devices that articulate the construction of the novel’s characters and the relationship that exists between an imperial discourse, literary creation and a social imagination.

During these three days we are going to collectively read and interpret Stoker’s work, the themes that connect Dracula to the tradition of his time and the most original elements: the aim is to understand the work in the context of events that marked the social history of imperial Britain at the end of the century from an anthropological perspective. During the last session of the seminar: there will be a guided tour around the Dracula exhibition ‘ Dracula un monstruo sin reflejo’ (Dracuala a monster without a reflection).

Virginia Fusco, is the leader of these workshops, she is an anthropologist and master in Gender and Postcolonial Studies. She is currently developing her research doctorate about contemporary neo-gothic literature and social imagination, with particular emphasis on Anglo-American production in the last few years.
