WHAT IS IT? “Moulage” is a dressmaking technique used during the creative process of fashion design. Colloquially, it is known as “eyeballing” due to the fact that patterns are cut directly on a mannequin or person's body. The technique requires a keen sense of observation in order to manipulate the fabrics used, discover their creative and technical possibilities, and understand their potential limitations. The characteristics of the raw materials that the designer works with are determining factors for deciding the shape and design being created.
WHAT DOES THE MODELLING CONSIST IN? > Modelling consists in laying out the fabric on the mannequin. The most recommended method is to choose a fabric similar to the one to be used when cutting the final pattern in order to avoid variations in the end result. This technique most commonly uses cotton fabrics. Cotton fabrics are used to make the so-called "toile", which serves as the base pattern for creating the pattern on the mannequin.
  > The main difference between this technique and using paper for cutting patterns is that working directly on the mannequin produces a closer match with reality.
COURSE DESIGN The course will be tailored to the needs and knowledge of each participant. We will start with the basics but if there are any participants with a more advanced knowledge we will adapt the course contents accordingly.
TARGETED AT: People involved in the fashion, dressmaking and art worlds. A knowledge of pattern-making is not required as the point is to create a garment from scratch, using a mannequin and exploring all the potential it offers. Participants will receive an attendance certificate at the end of the course.
GOALS: > To learn how to make a base pattern out of a simple piece of cloth.

> We will also learn how to transfer these base patterns onto paper to have a basis upon which to work.
  > Using different fabric textures, we will learn how to model on a mannequin depending on the fall of the cloth or the design we want to achieve. We will also create volumetric forms and see how they look on paper to obtain a 3D vision of what we wish to design.

> This course offers each participant individual attention to make the most of the time available. After teaching some basic notions, participants will be invited to let their imaginations run wild and create their own designs.
MATERIAL INCLUDED IN THE COURSE > Retor (a strong cotton fabric) for modelling on the mannequin. > Different types of fabrics to observe their behaviour when working with them. > Paper for transferring the creations designed on the mannequin and cutting the pattern.
MANDATORY MATERIAL FOR PARTICIPANTSSewing kit: pins, thread, needle, scissors, pencils, markers, curved ruler and straight ruler. > Mannequin. Each participant must bring his/her own mannequin.

Esther Noriega has eight years of experience in the fashion industry. She started studying design and fashion when she was 17. Drawing was her passion but her obsession was how to give form to her drawings, and this tipped the balance. She ended up studying pattern-making in order to bring the creations in her mind to life. After studying different pattern-making systems, working at companies like Pronovias and Amaya Arzuaga, and learning haute couture with the designer Petro Valverde, she decided to launch her own fashion brand. In January 2005 she opened first atelier-shop where she designs and sews her own creations.
