The Department of Culture and Sport at Madrid City Council, through the public company Madrid Destino and Matadero Madrid, is extending the application deadline for the Artistic Directorship of the Naves at Matadero until Wednesday 6 July at 3pm. For the first time in their history, Naves 10, 11 and 12 of the former municipal slaughterhouse, devoted to the performing arts since the complex was reopened as a Centre for Contemporary Creation in 2007, will have their own artistic director, as up to now the directorship has been in the hands of Teatro Español. The decision was taken as a result of the interest in reclaiming the spaces for the initial mission outlined in the Matadero Madrid Master Plan, which is: to offer a space for work, resources and exhibition for creative artists working in the performing arts; balance programming between the various disciplines involved (dance, theatre, music); and promote interdisciplinarity and dialogue with all artistic expressions occupying Matadero Madrid. According to the selection rules, in addition to assessing the artistic quality and cultural value of the project, the intention is to place less emphasis on the length of the candidate’s professional background and instead concentrate on its importance and national and/or international impact. A professional profile with a capability for dialogue, consensus-building and liaising with the cultural fabric is also extremely important. The coherence of the project, its social return, whether it promotes research and its ability to reach out to new audiences are other factors that will be taken into account when applications are assessed. Selection process The choice of the new artistic director will be the responsibility of an evaluation committee, comprising renowned and experienced professionals and experts from the local, national and international cultural community. They will be in charge of judging the merits of applications and the suitability of the projects, as well as making a final decision on the artistic directorship by 15 October. The selection process is divided into two stages. First, the committee shall pre-select a minimum of three and a maximum of six bids from the pre-projects submitted by 6 July. Second, finalists will be given a new deadline to draw up a detailed plan of their projects, with the last phase being face-to-face interviews and the evaluation committee’s final decision. Unlike previous open calls, the evaluation committee’s decision will be binding for Madrid Destino’s Board of Directors, which shall appoint the candidate nominated by the independent committee.
