MÁS MATADERO.  PHOTOESPAÑA.  A haunting portrait of the 48 years of Portuguese dictatorship rendered by its police records and the testimonies of its political prisoners.
What can a photograph reveal about a political system?  What can a picture taken more than 35 years ago say about our present?  Using the police records of the political prisoners taken by the Portuguese dictatorship (1926-1974), 48 sets out to reveal the methods used by an authoritarian system to keep itself going.

48 has been awarded the Cinéma du Réel Grand Prix 2010, the FIPRESCI at DokLeipzig 2010, and an honourable mention at the Festival Punto de Vista 2011, among others.

Susana de Sousa Dias (Lisbon, 1972) is on staff at the Facultad de Bellas Artes at the Universidad de Lisboa and studies the relationship between film and contemporary art.  She is especially interested in archival work.  De Sousa Dias is currently finishing work on a feature-length film, Luz Obscura.
