MATADERO MADRID

CENTRE FOR CONTEMPORARY CREATION

Matadero Madrid is run by Madrid City Council’s Department of Culture and Sport. Created in 2006, Matadero is located in the city’s former slaughterhouse and cattle market, a complex that is of great historical and architectural value, has tremendous character and is a focal point for Madrid’s citizens. Matadero Madrid's activity is organised through the Transversal Programmes Unit of Intermediae (a space for research into and production of situated artistic practices that promotes citizen involvement in cultural production); the Centre for Artistic Residencies and Medialab in Matadero. Through three public centres with independent artistic management: Cineteca Madrid, Centro Danza Matadero and Nave 10 Matadero, and through a series of private partners whose initiatives contribute to a broad, diverse and multidisciplinary global programme: Central de Diseño (a platform to promote design run by the Fundación Diseño de Madrid-DIMAD), Casa del Lector (an international centre for research, development and innovation in reading, run by the Germán Sánchez-Ruipérez Foundation), Madrid Artes Digitales (Immersive Experience Centre) and Academia de las Artes Escénicas de España. Each and every one of these spaces make up a programme that is being built organically. Because it is precisely this multiple specificity of Matadero that in itself generates a more propitious field for the collective exchange of new ideas.

CENTRE FOR ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE

The centre’s work is based on the firm belief that public institutions are duty bound to support experimentation rather than the reproduction of standard formulas. This means that Matadero Madrid plays with new formats of cultural production, which provides residency work spaces for homegrown and overseas creative artists. Through agreements with cultural institutions in other countries, Matadero Madrid runs a programme of regular interdisciplinary residencies in which the city's artists work alongside fellow creatives from other cities and have the chance to travel to other residency locations elsewhere in the world. After a period of coexistence in the work spaces, the processes are opened up to the local community with a public viewing.

INTERMEDIAE

Intermediae is a space in Matadero Madrid devoted to socially engaged artistic practices approached from the angle of research and cultural innovation. It was the programme chosen and designed for the launch of Matadero Madrid in 2007, and in its over ten years of history the space has become a key cultural venue in the city of Madrid and a national and international benchmark for contemporary culture that specialises in developing art and community projects. Ecology, childhood, civic engagement in culture, cultural mediation and the right to the city, among other areas, have been the mainstays of a collectively-created programme that offers a window to the interests and feelings that unite the artistic community with an interest in the social that has been pursued both inside and outside Matadero Madrid´s walls.

MEDIALAB

Medialab is a community laboratory that acts as a meeting place for the production of open cultural projects. Anyone can submit proposals of their own or help carry out other proposals. The activities are organised around working groups, open calls for the production of projects, collaborative research and learning communities dedicated to a wide range of topics. As a space that is open to the public, it functions thanks to its cultural mediation programme which is designed to guide and welcome users and to connect them to projects and vice versa, turning the space into a hospitable place where listening and care play key roles.  The activities are geared towards production and debate and have different formats and times to be able to respond to different interests and people’s ability to take part in them.

NAVE 10 MATADERO

CONTEMPORARY DRAMA CREATION

Nave 10 Matadero is a public centre for the production and promotion of the performing arts. Located in Matadero Madrid, it’s dedicated to the creation of contemporary drama and offers the public a stable and accessible programme. The main aim of this theatrical space is to promote new playwrights and stage directors and to create a place where emerging writers and directors and established professionals can meet, reflect and discuss ways to develop new ideas, practices and artistic creation. In order to concentrate, enhance and showcase the talent of creators from Madrid and elsewhere, Nave 10 Matadero is based on three fundamental pillars: contemporary Spanish playwriting, new stage directing, and training and innovation in the performing arts.

CENTRO DANZA MATADERO

Centro Danza Matadero is the welcoming home of dance in Madrid. The vitality of this organic, open, diverse, inclusive and cross-disciplinary cultural project stems from the city’s deep-rooted traditions in Spanish dance, and from the universality that serves as its core inspiration. With a dialectic that harmoniously combines the I and the We, the centre and the periphery, the neighbourhood and the world, Centro Danza Matadero interacts with its surroundings and draws nourishment from its cultural heritage and innovations, proactively responding to all aesthetic trends and languages. Centro Danza Matadero seeks to contribute to the fusion of Madrid and Dance in the same cultural sphere. It strives for Matadero Madrid to be identified with Dance, linking its cultural activities with the choreutic centres and involving the citizenry in its development, both as a creative asset and as a subject of creation.

CASA DEL LECTOR

PRIVATE PARTNER

Casa del Lector is a place dedicated to the experience of reading, reading’s new face, reading awareness and education for those who encourage reading to others. It is a space where the general public and the professional world mix: adults, young people and children; but also the written word, an image, art. Any cultural work requires good reading skills in order to be understood and apreciated.

CENTRAL DE DISEÑO

PRIVATE PARTNER

Managed by the Fundación Diseño Madrid, in collaboration with the Association of Madrid Designers (DIMAD), Central de Diseño is a point of reference for the sector both nationally and internationally. The logo of Matadero Madrid, which was produced by a team of prestigious designers, is the first outcome of the collaboration between DIMAD and the City Council of Madrid. Central de Diseño (Design Center) embraces both tried and tested formulas as well as training, dissemination and day-to-day creative activities. It has already become a powerful generator of internal and external services within the whole of the Matadero Madrid complex, providing a range of support to other components of Madrid’s new cultural axis.

MADRID ARTES DIGITALES

PRIVATE PARTNER

With an area of almost 2,000 m², the centre will bolster the city’s position in one of the emerging sectors with the greatest scope in the cultural and creative industries, and strengthen Matadero Madrid's status as a complex for artistic creation and experimentation.

ACADEMIA ARTES ESCÉNICAS DE ESPAÑA

PRIVATE PARTNER

Artistic and cultural entity aimed at promoting, defending and dignifying the performing arts in our country, encouraging their national and international promotion, as well as fostering their progress, development and improvement.
