Matadero Madrid, a contemporary creation center under the Area of Culture, Tourism, and Sports, will host Matadero Multipista from May 23 to June 13—a series of thematic sessions focused on today’s most current global music, taking place every Friday. Led by Pablo Gil, host of Radio 3’s Multipista and current Culture Editor at El Mundo, these sessions will take place at Nave Una with free entry until capacity is reached.
Matadero Multipista will spotlight 21st-century sounds that emerged far from the Anglo-Saxon music industry, through four double-feature Fridays: an informal conversation with experts at 8:00 p.m., followed by a DJ set starting at 9:15 p.m.
The first session on May 23 will focus on new Latin music. Beyond reggaeton’s commercial success lies a wide array of styles blending modern and traditional rhythms. Over the past two decades, many urban subgenres have emerged—from dembow and moombathon to electrocumbia, Argentine trap, electrolatino, and neoperreo—anchoring Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Chile, and Puerto Rico as major hubs of a continental wave. Pablo Gil will speak with communicator Miriam Martín, followed by a DJ set from Ms Nina at Nave Una.
K-pop takes center stage on May 30. South Korea has leveraged culture to project a dynamic global image, with music leading the way. Long before Parasite won an Oscar or Han Kang received a Nobel Prize, K-pop’s bubbly songs sparked a worldwide craze. DJ Sani (OfficialKEvents) will lead the party after a talk between Pablo Gil and electronic pop singer-producer Marta Movidas.
Urban music headlines the third session on June 6. A fusion of rap, trap, pop, drill, and Latin rhythms now dominates the charts in Spain, France, and Italy—and also across Morocco, Algeria, and Egypt—creating a cross-cultural soundtrack embraced by Millennials and Gen Z. Pablo Gil will chat with Sarah Robledo of independent label Dale Play Records. Then, pioneer DJ and producer Kabasaki will take over.
The final session on June 13 is dedicated to Africa’s rich musical landscape. From South African amapiano and Nigerian rap and R&B, to Ghanaian hiplife, Angolan kuduro, Congolese congotronics, and Uganda’s Nyege Nyege experimental sounds—Africa offers one of the most dynamic scenes today. Pablo Gil will speak with journalist, curator, and researcher Tania Safura Adam. Ugandan DJ Catu Diosis will close out this highly anticipated return of Multipista.
A new edition of DEMM at Matadero Madrid
Once again, this contemporary creation center will host DEMM 25, a festival marking European Music Day. From June 18 to 22, the program includes concerts at Plaza Matadero, family-friendly music at Nave Una, and films related to visual music at Cineteca Madrid.
Since its debut in 2009, this festival has become a staple of Matadero Madrid’s calendar, offering a snapshot of contemporary music with a lineup that spans rock, pop, and electronic genres, showcasing rising stars and new trends.
Curated by music promoter Nacho Ruiz, and with support from Heineken® and poster designer Javier Navarro (aka “El dios de los tres”), Matadero Madrid reaffirms its commitment to innovative musical genres and scenes through DEMM 25.
International sounds at Plaza Matadero
Friday, June 20 opens with Emilia Grima, a breakout artist on Madrid’s underground electronic scene. Known for flipping expectations on their head, her sets are bold and subversive. Sharing the stage is London-based Peruvian artist Sofía Kourtesis, a standout on the international scene thanks to her spark-filled blend of techno beats, sunny synths, subversive energy, and house hedonism.
Also performing is Moxie, a London-based DJ, radio host, and cultural agitator. Whether on stage or on her weekly show, she navigates effortlessly between techno, garage, soulful house, and Afro beats. Rounding out the lineup is Hot Chip (DJ set), British electronic music icons whose irresistibly melodic and cleverly arranged tracks have defined international electro-pop for two decades.
Saturday, June 21 brings more concerts to DEMM 25, headlined by Error 97. Band members Álvaro Casado, Gonzalo García, Sara Guayanay, and Nicolás Escardó (ages 18 to 20) pour their raw thoughts and feelings into their music. Also performing are Hinds, the rock duo of Carlota Cosials and Ana Perrote—arguably Spain’s most internationally recognized rock band, acclaimed wherever they go.
Joining them is La Paloma, poised to be Madrid’s next great rock band. Their debut Todavía no is already a landmark release, with anthemic tracks that have packed venues like La Riviera. The Galician artist Baiuca will also perform, blending traditional folk with a bold electronic spirit.
Family concerts at Nave Una
DEMM 25 also caters to the music lovers of the future with two special family concerts at Nave Una at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 21 and Sunday, June 22. Saturday features Remate & Wild Honey, two of Spain’s most respected musicians: Remate, one of the country’s most internationally recognized artists, and Guillermo Farré, the pop connoisseur behind Wild Honey. Sunday’s concert will be performed by the Creativa Junior Big Band from the Escuela de Música Creativa.
DEMM 25 Tickets and Schedule
All concerts on Friday, June 20 at Plaza Matadero are free until capacity is reached and will run from 8:00 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Tickets for the Saturday, June 21 concerts at Plaza Matadero (8:00 p.m. to 1:15 a.m.) cost €5. Each family concert at Nave Una on Saturday and Sunday at 12:00 p.m. also costs €5.
Music-themed films at Cineteca
Cineteca Madrid joins the European Music Day festivities with three avant-garde film screenings curated by the Top Film Twitter team. On June 5, the theme is algebraic rhythms; June 19 will focus on memories and melodies; and June 26 features Disintegration Loop 1.1.
In collaboration with the Punto y Raya Festival, two sessions will explore the concept of visual music, where sound and image blend to form a sensory experience greater than the sum of its parts. The June 20 session is titled Synesthesias, and the June 21 session, Evanescences.
