75 YEARS OF 'CAHIERS DU CINÉMA'

In April 1951, the first issue of Cahiers du cinéma appeared. Under the intellectual influence of André Bazin, the magazine articulated a gaze focused on mise-en-scène and the ethical relationship between the camera and the world. This perspective was nourished by films that, in many cases, did not yet enjoy canonical recognition but functioned as true schools of thought for a generation of young French critics who, shortly thereafter, would make the leap into directing.

For François Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, Claude Chabrol, Jacques Rivette, or Éric Rohmer, these works were not merely objects of analysis, but triggers for a future practice that would mark a turning point in film history. From its very first issues, Cahiers understood criticism as a form of aesthetic and political intervention. Writing about cinema did not mean describing it, but taking a side, disputing meanings, and questioning established hierarchies. This cycle brings together some of those films that filled pages of ink, sparked intellectual passions, and provoked decisive controversies. Seventy-five years later, their echoes continue to resonate in contemporary theory and practice.
