“Slaughterman/Paradise” (Matarife/Paraíso) tells the story of the desires that drive us in our search for the ideal, the dreams that feed those ideals and the abysses towards which they push us. In this show, Andrés Marín and Ana Morales guide us through the twists and turns of their own search, where heaven and earth fuse and are confused. Because here, heaven becomes flesh, the spirit is incarnated in movement, and sacrifice is inseparable from its sublimation.

Although the figures of the dancers and the timbres of the voices echo Dante’s footsteps as he pursues Beatriz, the Christian paradise of the Divine Comedy functions here only through transparency, in the negative, like a shadow that penetrates the motifs and movements of the show to broaden its perspective. Because the paradise at play here is not the one that belongs to those who need to be saved, but rather the one that welcomes those of us who get lost in it of our own free will, led by our desires. And the faith that drives this flamenco is an irrepressible faith in the freedom of art, an art without measure that celebrates how it betrays both the laws of tradition and of the genre itself.

Rooted in sacred and popular practices, both religious and pagan, drawn from the cultural history of our Andalusia, the flamenco dance and song woven by the artists of "Slaughterman/Paradise" want to lead us to the heart of their obsessions, tracing the lines of a world where the contemporary is built on the vestiges of the ancient and where history and tradition are refined and rewritten. This is the dangerous journey that this show takes us on, advancing against the wind and the tide, abandoning the arms that make us strong, stripping us of all the dreams that make us glorious, in order to find a faint but burning light, a light of today, a paradise that lasts for just one day but is worth an entire lifetime: the sense of freedom.
