The second edition of ANIMARIO. Madrid International Contemporary Animation Festival, will take place from 26 to 29 September 2019. The festival, organised by Matadero Madrid and Cineteca Madrid with the support of the Plaza Río 2 shopping centre, showcases this productive medium of expression, which brings together creativity and technology like no other in techniques that weave together science and technology, the contemporary and the traditional.

New at this second edition, and in an effort to consolidate itself as a reference event on the animation festival scene, Animario is including an international competition section, with a 5,000-euro prize for the best international animated short film (entries close on 23 June). This comes on top of the second edition of the ANIMARIO-Plaza Río 2 Prize for Animation Production, which has a cash prize of €18,000 (entries open until 20 August).

Animation based on reality, with themes like colonialism, gender perspectives, emigration and ecology, along with personal and extraordinary stories, some based on existing literary works or comics, plus a special series on animals in animation, will come together at a festival which will bring to Madrid some of the most striking proposals on today’s international scene, without forgetting creators from the past whose work continues to be relevant today. Humour (white, black, adult, subtle) is present in many of these works as a wake-up call and an element of subversion. All of these activities and screenings will make Cineteca and Matadero the place to discover new animation from around the world first-hand along with some of its biggest driving forces
