The musicians Mayorga and Gualdrón have created a narrative axis in their common project Atlantic lslands that is based on the emergence of a new archipelago of islands.
Colombian musician Julián Mayorga emerges from the riskiest wing of the new Latin tropicalist scene. He gathers together elements of popular song, electronics, Colombian folklore and psychedelia through experimentation. With songs loaded with humour, surrealism, a mythology of their own, a dynamic show and eccentric visual animations he has performed in such festivals as Sónar Reykjavik (Iceland, 2018), Sónar Barcelona (Spain, 2017) and RBMA Montreal (Canada, 2016), among others.
Andrés Gualdrón is a Colombian musician and researcher who has toured Latin America and Europe presenting his musical projects White Animals (Animales Blancos) and Magallanes, with whom he has recorded four albums. In 2012, he participated in the recording project Calidostopia!, which he recorded with the legendary producer of experimental electronic music, Markus Popp (Oval). He is currently a Professor of Music History in Bogotá and he has written articles on popular and avant-garde music for various media.
Mayorga and Gualdrón have created a narrative axis in their common project Atlantic lslands that is based on the emergence of a new archipelago of islands in the Atlantic Ocean. “These fictional territories, which appear in a parallel reality to ours, are not only an accumulation of unknown maps forms but also the epicentre of a new human history (with its migrations, settlements, cultural interweaving, symbols, images and sounds)," they explain.
By means of a disk and a printed book, with Atlantic Islands their intention is to narrate this story, taking elements of a mockumentary to do so.
The exercise of imagining a new territory and a new society involves different challenges and throws up various questions for these artists. “Even if it is a fictional exercise, the question arises: Can one transcend the encyclopaedic description of the “other” - as in the manner of old notions of anthropology - to show their existence in a more dynamic and sensitive way? Are the boundaries of culture limited to the invisible edges of the political geography? When we try to tell the lives of others, in how many ways are we really making them up? When we describe “others”, to what extent are we actually talking about ourselves? These fundamental questions guide the elaboration of this story and its narrative, and determine the manner in which we have approached the project in a sonorous and plastic manner”, they conclude.
