Raised in the suburbs of Lisbon, André Uerba admits that most of his inspiration still comes from there. After studying graphic design, photography and theatre, his artistic collaborations with Ana Borralho andJoão Galante in the piece Atlas and his solo pieces, such as Terrarium, half-way between performance art and visual art, have made him one of the great promises of Portuguese living arts. Based in Berlin since 2013, he has held photography exhibitions, performative installations and video art pieces in different cities in Germany and Portugal. Burn Time is his latest creation, developed in a residency between O Espaço do Tempo (Portugal) and PACT Zollverein (Germany) and premiered in July 2018 in Tanzfabrik Berlin, during the Open Spaces cycle.
When you enter the universe created by André Uerba, your vital rhythm slows down. The dictatorship of watches is left outside, while inside Burn Time, hundreds of delicate cotton threads, which create a network of sculptures, lay down the beat of the work. The performers set fire to these threads, one by one, turning the space into an ephemeral firmament, an inverted Perseid meteor shower in slow motion that fades away, bearing witness to the importance of the moment. Darkness, threads, fire and human bodies dialogue with a new time.
The calmness of the scene soothes the hustle and bustle of the heart of the audience, which is introduced into a state of meditation thanks to these tiny flames. “The choreography of Burn Time evolves from a single gesture: the slow ignition of cotton threads. The use of lighters and the soft rustling of the threads form, in addition to the noises of the bodies that are present, the only sound in the dark room. Little by little, the cotton threads disappear, until only an empty space remains, with the bodies of the actors and the remains of the spectator. Then, the choreography enters a second phase in an empty space”, André explains.
Along with this action, certain choreographic questions arise, for example, what kind of choreography can be created from the relationship between mechanics and the slowness of a single gesture? Or how does the body respond to this deliberately executed movement , and what mood can it generate? The answers will be in the small glows that will illuminate the eyes of the audience.
