Black Panther (2018) is now on track to become the highest-grossing superhero movie of all time. The film’s success speaks to its real-world relevance and the socio-cultural resonance of issues relating to race, identity, and the politics of representation in the United States.
This course, to be presented over two sessions at Madrid’s Casa del Lector, is designed for students who are interested in utilizing popular culture as a tool for critical analysis and/or broadening their knowledge of American culture.
We will examine the character’s comic-book incarnations, focusing on Ta-Nehisi Coates’ “A Nation Under Our Feet”; analyze the 2018 film; and consider how Black Panther: The Album, produced by Kendrick Lamar, utilizes music as a storytelling device.
