In the Echoes course of reading: the art of encouraging reading in unconventional environments, we carry out an analysis and description of experiences to promote reading in living spaces that are different to libraries and education centres. Its aim is to uncover areas of reading that are slightly unusual and that complement the more traditional methods in order to ensure a pluralistic offering to a wider cross section of people so that the book can form part of their everyday lives.   To do this, throughout the course, we talk about the importance of having these types of spaces to meet the requirements of people that, for one reason or other, don’t have physical access to libraries. It is therefore not to show intimate reading situations, or those that are more or less exotic than others, but to support, moreover, key ideas that can serve as the foundation for future initiatives to promote reading that is applicable to any type of library or cultural centre.

We are therefore presenting experiences and strategies that are above all concerned with imagination, creativity and austerity in the encouragement of reading. The economic crisis can cause disenchantment among citizens, but does not affect the hope and tenacity of professionals. Many of the activities taking place here will be carried out (without a single euro) in order to navigate the economic storm and keep libraries more alive than ever.   As Einstein said: “In times of crisis only imagination is more important than knowledge”.
