CZECH CINEMA OF THE 60s

BEYOND THE NEW WAVE

Emerging from FAMU’s Film and Television School, this movement brought together a generation of filmmakers such as Miloš Forman, Věra Chytilová, Jan Němec, and Jiří Menzel, who challenged the rules of socialist realism with aesthetic boldness and critical vision. Their works, marked by formal experimentation and a lucid view of social reality, exposed the fractures of a society grappling with its contradictions.

This series proposes a reinterpretation of that historical moment, recovering films that—amid censorship and surveillance—explored intimate gestures of dissent, hidden longings, and mechanisms of symbolic escape. Thirteen titles sketch, from diverse perspectives, a map of imagination in times of repression.

Balancing visual poetry and satire, this cinema embodies a creative insubordination where the fantastic becomes a coded language of resistance. A radical, living legacy that continues to speak to those who seek in film a way of thinking about the world.
