This text by Gogol shows us, within the context of a tumultuous time, two mysteries of the human soul: identity and love, major questions that persist in the life of contemporary man. With these ingredients, and with a lot of humor, the piece speaks, basically, about what we are and how we love.
The tale describes how Aksenti Ivanovich, a civil servant for the Czarist Russian bureaucracy, begins to lose his grasp on reality due to a combination of factors: the routine of his miserable job, the love he feels for his boss's daughter, and his obsessive belief that he has “noble blood”. By the end he believes himself to be the king of Spain. Then comes his being committed, where the painful experience of collision of his insanity with his surroundings spells out his tragic end.
The idea of putting this story together in a play was born of a friendly encounter between José Luis Gª Pérez and Luis Luque. The Fringe Madrid 2013 festival did not hesitate in programming this interesting offering, giving them the rooftop of Matadero, where they offered five shows under the stars of the Madrid summer sky. Now you can enjoy the show in a new and interesting seating arrangement at Nave 1 del Español at Matadero.
