Textiles are always with us in our day-to-day lives and have been since ancient times with the production of ropes, nets and baskets being one of the first industries, if not the first. This is because of their multiple uses. They are able to protect as well as offering comfort both in and outside of the home. They also carry a lot of symbolic value and communicate a range of things including where we're from, who our favourite football team is and the causes we believe in. And, as always, it is a way of representiong our status, real or aspirational.
The fact that we encounter these textiles every day means that they often go unnoticed or that their amazing characteristics can often pass us by. The manufacture of textilles has been at the forefront of technical advances beginning with the Industrial Revolution of the 19th Century in Northern England through to the boom of synthetic fibres in the 20th and 21st Centuries,
In this age of intelligent textiles there is still a great deal of artisan craftmanship. In india alone it is thought that there are 25 million active craftsman, many textiles artisans. This mix between craftmansship and technology, real or emulated, represents our current lifestyles. This was first explored in the 90s y Japanese designers and pioneers that will also be exhitibing their work in major museums, starting with MOMA in New York.
Today we are witnessing the revival of the importance of textiles through support for fashion and we especially through the craftmanship which still pervades in high fashio, both emerging and established. In Module 1 we will provide a vocabulary and understanding of the tolls needed in textiles design and in Module 2 we will study textiles so that we are able to appreciate and explore what has been learnt.
