DI_OPEN | WORKSHOP: TYPOGRAPHIC REFINEMENT

Description The course aims to revaluate the graphic work with care and typesetting taken as a starting point, where the letter is the protagonist either through its form or function.   Objectives   To provide participants with the basic principles and methods of typographic design, its historical formal evolution and the technology of the Latin Alphabet.   Contents   The differentiation between functional and experimental typography. The relationship between form and function. Typography in posters and advertising. Typography in editorial design. Typography in company branding and products. Typography in signage. Typographic hierarchies: Cultural aspects, form and space in typography. Typefaces and their variables. The selection and combination of typefaces. Spatial organisation: Grids, typographic layout, line spacing, margins, columns. Font size. The Pica. Headings and text. Font colour. Automatic leading. Optical margin alignment. Punctuation marks and their positioning. Letter spacing: Kerning and Trading. Word spacing: processes, quotation marks. Emphasis: Bold and Italics. Justification. Widows and Orphans. Bleeding. Upper and lower case, “Small Caps”. Alternative characters and “Swash”. Numbers. Older styles and misalignment.   Diacritics, monetary symbols. Advantages of the Open Type format. The production of two practice based works along with alternatives.   Methodology    A presentation of the experience with a slide show and the creation of two practice based works developed in the workshop. It is recommended (although not essential) to bring a personal computer, camera and basic drawing materials with you.
