La Societat Doctor Alonso, directed by dancer and playwright Sofía Asencio and stage director Tomàs Aragay, is present at festivals and venues committed to contemporary creation in cities like Montreal, New York and Barcelona, among others. Asencio and Aragay fuse genres and performance forms and gather different artists together, creating their own way of inhabiting the stage, conceiving of it as a place to put the least remarkable where there should be remarkability. They have built a language based on the concept of displacement; displacing in order to unveil something.
El desenterrador (The Unearther) is a performative creation and research project focusing on the body and words, undertaken by a multidisciplinary team in a number of residencies/workshops carried out in several cities around the world.
From 6 to 10 and 13 to 17 November, the Permanent Excavation Workshop will be held featuring various groups from the city of Madrid. The excavations consist of discussions guided by a set of rules designed to foster team work, listening and the opportunity to jointly explore the designated word in each session. Because each excavation is structured around a single word. Through improvised dialogue between the participants, the word resounds once again, enabling its modern-day meaning and potential to be understood. The aim of the workshop is not to redefine words but to excavate the process, discover their musicality, find in them unexpected elements and, finally, ensure awareness of our relationship with language. “We unearth words in a real and a figurative sense. We work with words that have fallen out of use, those whose meaning has changed or which are taboo, and – in particular – those associated with ‘values’ of our ethical system that we think must be revisited. We want to explore the close and changing relationship that arises between words and their usage, and the actions they give rise to; a two-way relationship that gives meaning and substance to the way we inhabit the world”, explains La Societat Doctor Alonso. El desenterrador (The Unearther) is the last workshop experience and is open to the public so that people can take part and discover their connection to language and to themselves.
