Curated by Gonzalo Cordero de Ciria, this new section at the fair makes manifest a reality that exists but generally goes unnoticed: contemporary artistic creation through animation. Animation and its different processes are an important vehicle for artistic creation and experimentation, for international and local artists alike, and have a strong presence in the panorama of Spanish galleries.
¡Se mueve!/It's Moving! features the participation of Canal+Xtra, with programming devoted to animation throughout fair dates, and Museo ABC Centre for Art/Drawing/Illustration, which will be printing a book on the section.
In this section one can appreciate to their fullest the variety of styles, techniques, formats and themes in contemporary animation. From artists who work on paper, physically creating each of the images they produce, to work made using digital drawing in 2D, artists who use 3D as a vehicle, those using stop-motion, and those doing research in new technological advances applied to animation. A number of works will also be on display that use animation as a mixed form, combining it with drawings, mechanisms, sculptures and creating site specific installations. Concerning themes and topics, one will be able to appreciate the freedom of creative expression that makes animation a suitable medium for dealing with all of the following topics: architecture and the city as spaces in conflict, the relationship between the economy and affect, the family as a source of tension, the relationship between the individual, the landscape, and nature, the transformation and metamorphosis of the human body, the biologization of what has always been technological, the world of dreams and sexual perversions, the manipulation of society using icons and mass media, public art and the forms of expression known as graffiti and urban art.
¡Se mueve!/It's Moving! features eleven Spanish galleries representing twenty artists working with this medium.
The chosen artists are: Rosana Antolí and Guillermo Martín Bermejo, Vicente Blanco, Bonus Extra, Antón Cabaleiro, Clemente Calvo, Diego del Pozo Barriuso, Sandra Paula Fernández, Pablo Fernández Pujol, Anaisa Franco, Ruth Gomez, Fernando Gutiérrez + Tape, Salvador Herrera, Laramascoto, Enriqe Marty, Marina Nuñez, Txuspo Poyo, Fernando Renes, Evan Roth, Nelo Vinuesa and Juan Zamora, who are being represented by the following galleries: Adora Calvo (Salamanca), Arana Poveda (Madrid), Distrito 4 (Madrid), Espacio Líquido (Gijón), Espacio Marzana (Bilbao), Liebre (Madrid), Moriarty (Madrid), Marisa Marimón (Orense), N2 (Barcelona), Urban gallery (online, Barcelona) and Valle Ortí (Valencia). ¡Se mueve!/It's Moving! features the participation of Canal+Xtra, which, since the beginning of its programming, has always encouraged the short as a form and which has arranged programming devoted to animation, for the duration of the fair, where there will be screenings of selected works by great directors of international acclaim, including Koji Yamamura, Juan Pablo Zaramella, Luis Nieto, Joseph Pierce, Andrew Huang and Carlo Vogele, to name a few.
Additionally, Museo ABC Centre for Art/Drawing/Illustration is once again showing their interest in animation as an important field in the world of contemporary drawing. The exhibitions, the support, and the prizes awarded to artists such as Juan Zamora and Fernando Gutierrez + Tape, included in this section, exemplify the centre's clear support of this medium for artistic creation.
In addition, of the conferences programmed for the dates of the fair, one such conference will be devoted to animation collectorship by the section's curator, Gonzalo Cordero de Ciria.
