FOCUS ON MILAGROS MUMENTHALER
ECAM Forum, FILMADRID International Film Festival, Cineteca Madrid, Atalante, and DAMA present a retrospective this June in Madrid dedicated to Milagros Mumenthaler, accompanied by a masterclass on her body of work
Few contemporary filmmakers have gifted us a relationship with the image as free, intuitive, and powerful as the Argentine director has throughout her career. Her films have left us with some of the most unforgettable images in recent cinema: suspended moments, minimal gestures, bodies, silences, and landscapes that resonate beyond the narrative. La idea de un lago and Abrir puertas y ventanas are already part of the sentimental education of much of the contemporary cinephile community, having become essential titles in the cinema of the last few decades.
Her cinema unfolds a singular relationship with the image, liberating it from conventional narrative structures to bring it closer to the sensory, to intuition, and to memory. Fragmentation does not appear here as distance, but as a profoundly vivid way of looking at the world and immersing ourselves in our most intimate memories. In her films, memories, affections, and personal experiences always reveal a political and collective dimension. Reviewing the Argentine filmmaker's work is an invitation to reclaim the gaze as an active exercise, to rediscover in the image not just a medium of representation, but a form of sensitive knowledge.
Her latest film, Las Corrientes, which opens the 12th edition of FILMADRID, is perhaps one of the most lucid ways cinema has found to reflect the present through dissociation, estrangement, and disconnection from what surrounds us. Through this retrospective, which covers her three feature films, we celebrate a filmmaker fundamental to the ethics and aesthetics of contemporary cinema, a creator who has expanded the possibilities of the cinematic image and our way of seeing.
A unique opportunity to enjoy the cinema of Milagros Mumenthaler and celebrate one of the most singular contemporary filmmakers on the international scene this June in Madrid.
