Matadero Madrid is defined in its master plan as a great laboratory of cutting-edge interdisciplinary creation linked to the city. It is a general space for sharing ideas about culture and the values of contemporary society. Open to all fields of creation, its mission is to encourage interaction and dialogue among the creators and with audiences. It was founded in 2006 by Madrid City Council to promote research, production, training, the dissemination of creation, and contemporary thinking in all its forms. Its areas of activity include the visual and performing arts, literature and reading, philosophy, music and sound art, cinema, design, fashion, architecture, urban planning and landscaping, all with a view to fostering a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach to creation. 

Open to the public since 2007, its evolution has been and continues to be marked by the involvement of the city's main agents and institutions active in the various areas of cultural creation. This commitment takes the form of a public-private partnership which promotes public participation in the project and guarantees its plurality, independence and viability.
