Directed by May Abdalla and Barry Gene Murphy, IMPULSE: PLAYING WITH REALITY is a mixed reality experience that, through immersive storytelling, offers a contemporary perspective on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The installation invites audiences into the minds of those who live on the edge between order and chaos, challenging the pathologizing narratives that have long defined the experience of individuals with this unique form of cognition.
With a runtime of forty minutes and narrated in English by Tilda Swinton, this mixed reality experience immerses viewers in the stories of four people whose life-defining decisions unfold in a vivid, meticulously crafted setting. Here, the boundaries between reality and perception blur, offering a compelling insight into the creativity, intensity, and turbulence of living with ADHD.
Though still widely misunderstood, ADHD can have a profound impact on those who experience it—making awareness essential and potentially life-changing. Through artistic expression, this work plays inventively with first-person narratives to deepen understanding of the lives of a significant portion of the population affected by the disorder.
This project received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the most recent edition of the Venice Biennale.
