In this book club we are taking a journey into the world of fantasy literature through the theme “ Dreams and Nightmares” and, maybe, it is this through literature that we are led into the dream world. Sometimes it’s difficult to distinguish between being awake and dreaming and the same could be said of this workshop’s aims.
A Book Club isn’t a class, but rather a group of people that read and debate as well as trying to reach their own conclusions about literature. In this case, the group is led by Antonio Rómar, and concern texts from many very diverse places in the world, chosen to set the stage for this meeting between the readers, we start off in territories that are always unknown: those of dreams, literature, fantasy, it is that which arises from a tear in the fabric of rational knowledge, from an alteration of the order of the real and common sense. And what else can dreams do?
We seek to guarantee students a fun and practical learning approach, to bring them an enjoyment of this literary genre (starting off from the specific theme, and from there, opening the door to a better understanding of literature in general) as well as encouraging reading habits and the acquisition of reading skills and tools that can enrich future experiences.
The nature of the workshop is based on the reading of several literary works in relation to the theme (in this case: “Dreams and Nightmares” in the context of fantasy literature) and subsequently to start a debate under the direction of the group leader. The texts, programmed to be read, will be announced beforehand and during the sessions their formal and technical characteristics, their relevance in relation to both the theme and literary history will be explained, as well as other areas of interest, which could be, in each case, something like: the author and the rest of their work. In the sessions we will constantly be going back to the text in order to achieve a deeper understanding of it and the literary phenomenon that it’s involved in.
In each session we will address stories by following authors:
1st session: H.P. Lovecraft
2nd session: Stephen King
3rd session: Ray Bradbury
4th session: Isaac Asimov
Antonio Rómar (Madrid, 1981) is the poet and teacher of these workshops. He graduated in Journalism, as well as in Literary Theory and Comparative Literature. Xatafi that edits the magazine Hélice. Which has thoughts on speculative fiction, focusing on the study of the dissemination of the fantasy genre and science fiction. Together with Jesús Urceloy he made a critical edition of One Thousand and One Nights (2007) for the publisher Cátedra and together with Pablo Mazo he has published a book called Aquelarre (Coven), an anthology of contemporary Spanish horror stories (2010) published by Salto de Página. His first collection of poems was Diversos destinos consulares
(Diverse Consular Destinies), Ed. Ya lo dijo Casimiro Parker, 2011.
