There is something in the light that fills the spaces of Naves Matadero -even in the ones that don’t have any windows- that has captivated this couple of photographers. And until they find what it is, Ximena and Sergio will not cease their incessant and curious search. Sometimes, the mystery rests on a pupil, a hand or a profile. Other times, it filters through a plastic, a cloth or a wall. In a jump or in the deepest of rests. Then, in that definitive moment of everlasting active standby, they shoot. And they do this to explain the existential questions that inhabit and make up this light. They do this out of impulse and vital need.
Ximena and Sergio, during week days throughout the past decade, immortalize relevant national and international personalities from the areas of culture, science, sport or politics, on the covers of the most important publications in Spain. And on weekends they portray the artists who perform at Naves Matadero. They began in March 2017, bewitched by the siren call of Ray Lee and, today, they are still deciphering through their camera everything the artists want to offer to it. “Every artist we have met is different, and enjoying the programming of Naves Matadero has evolved our way of thinking; and how could that not be so after spending a night with Llorenç Barber ringing bells for you!", they exclaim.
In their research into the essence of light, they have decided to go one step further and move on to moving images without forgetting about photography. In this way, their pictures have come to life while the mystery appears and disappears. “In the pursuit of a different way of developing our discourse, we have found the slipstream left behind by the image of the artists who are programmed in Naves Matadero, adding the parameters of time and sound to our portraits", the photographers explained.
Living Things is a photographed video installation in which all the artists leave a trail of their soul. That which is only visible thanks to the essence of the light that Ximena and Sergio pursue.
