ARCO AT MATADERO MADRID. Martin Creed was born in Wakefield, United Kingdom, in 1968, and grew up in Glasgow. He currently lives and works in London and Alicudi, Italy. He has shown his work in numerous exhibitions around the world, and in 2001 was awarded the Turner Prize for the piece entitled Work No. 227 The lights going on and off.
Language and music have always been an important part of Creed's work. In his band's performances, he often combines the visual arts with words, choreography and music.
Creed started his own band, Owada, in 1994, but stopped using this name in 1999. In 1997 the group released their first CD, Nothing, on the label David Cunningham's Piano. In the year 2000, Creed put out a recording of his songs under his own name, with Art Metropole of Toronto. In 2010 he designed the cover of a single by Futuristic Retro Champions, and lent his support to the single's release with a performance by his own group. In 2009 Creed wrote and choreographed ‘Ballet’, a show that combines discourse, music and dance, produced by Sadler's Wells, London. In 2010 ‘Ballet’ could be seen for eight days at the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh, as part of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. This piece also ran at the Sadler’s Wells theater, London, in June 2011.
The Madrid-based band Ginferno takes the stage with Creed to present their second disc, Mondo Totale. The group has stated that this album is “a dense jungle”, where rockabilly, Afro-Cuban, surf, Hindu raga, swing and other beats commingle. A paradise with many apples to be eaten- er, listened to. > Buy tickets in advance at www.ticketea.com Seating limited.
