The data confirms it —according to the Barometer of Reading Habits and Book Buying in Spain—: we are reading more and more, and an increasing number of young people are making reading one of their favorite hobbies. But beyond the figures, we know it from experience: there are few pleasures as enriching (and as sexy) as opening a good book. To paraphrase Lope de Vega: those who have read a good book, know it.
That is why this spring sees the return of Meet&Read/Fiesta de la lectura compartida, organized by Matadero Madrid and Casa del Lector. This is an invitation to transform the Matadero plaza into a vast literary meadow where you can sit and read alongside friends, neighbors… or people you haven’t met yet.
A literary picnic to read, share, and converse. A place to discover new stories and meet others through a common passion: reading. It doesn’t matter if you bring an essay, a comic, a historical novel, or a book of poems: all books have a place here.
The entry requirement is simple: bring a book and keep your phone put away during the event. A single notification on your device can ruin the best of sentences. We have a much better plan: reading, listening, and sharing.
The atmosphere will be set by composer and DJ Luis Miguel Cobo, winner of two MAX Awards, who will create the perfect soundscape to accompany the reading. Cultural outreach expert Fernando Bonete will host the gathering, chatting with attendees about books, authors, and the joys of reading.
Only the most important part is missing: the readers. Join us to celebrate reading and your favorite authors —from Cervantes to Gloria Fuertes, from Roberto Bolaño to Harper Lee, who is also celebrating her centenary—.
Bring your book.
Find your spot.
And come read in company.
