Camus created the play The Misunderstanding based on his ideas of the absurd, within his first series of works.  His philosophy of the absurd, framed around The Myth of Sisyphus, dramatized in Caligula and The Misunderstanding, and narrated in The Stranger, constituted a fundamental contribution for 20th century Existentialist philosophy.

The play The Misunderstanding is divided into three acts, in the manner of a classical tragedy, where the fate of the characters is in constant conflict with their desires.  Jan is the prodigal son who has left behind his mother and Martha, his sister.  Far from home, he meets Maria and marries her.  After more than twenty years of separation, he decides to return home and offer his fortune to the two abandoned women.  This is no easy matter, since they don't recognize him.  Jan pretends to be a customer at their inn, which provides the beginning of a misunderstanding that will prove very costly to all those involved.
