The Educational Institutions Students’ Show (bid_est) forming part of the BID Meeting of Education and Design and the Ibero-American Design Biennial is an important event that reflects the way in which educational institutions are interacting with the variety of changes taking place in the academic field.   This year 196 pieces of work from 94 education institutions in Latin America, Spain and Portugal have been brought together under the title Design for Health and Quality of Life. Through these works we are familiarised with the huge potential of the students and with the interesting context of the development of Latin American design.
This group show of young Latin American designers (bid_est) includes a selection of some of the best work from current students, recent graduates and post-graduates from the institutions taking part. Interior design and room design, industrial and product design, graphic design and visual communication, fashion, textiles and accessories, cross-disciplinary service and project design are not presented as a form of self-expression, but as the pursuit of solutions to improve people’s well-being.   Focusing this competition on matters of social innovation implies looking at the challenges of our everyday lives in order to generate a positive impact, from a design perspective, on our lived environment, mobility, our goods, ideas, industry, employment and on our entire way of life, to resolve existing problems in an innovative way.
Social design, design for social innovation, design for development, design for everyone, design for our future, design for a better world are all different facets, but all allude to a practical notion of design, closely linked to progress and life enhancement. From the straightforward relationship to well-being and quality of life, to the complex issues that medicine entails, health embraces a vast number of fields. The scope of design is continuously expanding, creating fresh perspectives on traditional scenarios and investigating new paths in non-traditional areas. New technology and the use of non-conventional materials have made it possible for designers to work in fields that were previously the exclusive domain of specialists. Health has always been a susceptible, delimited and pertinent field for design.
When talking about health and well-being, we are referring to social cohesion, social innovation, development, sustainability, recycling, water, energy, air, automation and mobility, signage, graphic art for medicine, biotechnology, ergonomics, design and spaces for all, universal accessibility, sustainable chemistry, domotics, environmental technology, digital dentistry, 3D prosthesis, cognitive accessibility in the public and private domain, orthopaedics, advanced materials and nano-materials, responsible objects, intelligent cities, the list goes on. A vast universe where design has a big role to play.
In this regard, the bid_est exhibition aims to show work based on good design practice, methodological innovation, collaborative projects, examples of synergy between educational institutions and companies, and proposals that demonstrate responsible design for a constantly changing environment. This Students’ Show is, without a doubt, a physical meeting place for generating synergies and creative enjoyment to celebrate the future of teaching and the future of design.
