Institution
The Instituto Mutante de Narrativas Ambientales [Mutant Institute of Environmental Narratives]created within Matadero Madrid to foster artistic practices in connection with other areas of knowledge, such as journalism, the humanities and social sciences, science and technological research, as a response to the challenges of the climate crisis. The institute postulates that the current global challenges are cultural and political, scientific and technological, and that they call for knowledge that extends across and beyond disciplinary boundaries, knowledge based on collective intelligence and social innovation that will make it possible to bring about radical structural transformations. Based on this conviction and through the research and analysis of the imaginaries and desires that continue to hold our society in thrall, the institute will be promoting strategies that help to create environmental narratives that go beyond traditional discourses associated with ecology.
The Instituto Mutante is supported by and operates through an interdisciplinary network, Platform Cities [itdUPM (Technical University of Madrid), Madrid City Council (Environment and Mobility Area) and Matadero Madrid]., the members of which are an international group of artists, designers, researchers, philosophers, scientists, engineers, architects, public policymakers and many other agents.
With their help, various working spaces have been launched related to inter-species communication; the river as a core component in the transformation of the city; the rights of nature and environmental justice (addressed by studying and condemning ecocides and ‘toxic biographies’); the new climate economies; and food systems.
Its main lines of activity are presented here through a series of activities, from a radio programme to performances, citizen science initiatives and climate fiction workshops, organised around three core themes: Co-operative Resilience, Urban nature and Non-human Entities.
The institute is also presenting new works by the artists Paula Nishijima, Robertina Šebjanič and Fito Conesa, all of them joint exercises in climate change adaptation, and the proposal for the creation of a Cyborg Garden in the Matadero Madrid complex.
