L.E.V. Matadero presents Noire, produced by Stéphane Foenkinos and Pierre‑Alain Giraud. This immersive augmented reality experience is based on the work of Tania de Montaigne and reclaims the legacy of Claudette Colvin, a 15-year-old Black teenager who, in 1955, refused to give up her seat to a white passenger on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama. Arrested and determined to plead not guilty, Claudette took the city to court in a bold act of resistance that preceded Rosa Parks’ more widely known protest—but was ultimately erased from public memory.
This piece transports the viewer to the heart of racial segregation in Alabama through augmented reality, creating an intimate and revealing dialogue between past and present. Noire invites audiences to inhabit Claudette’s memory, to honor her courage, and to reflect on the importance of making essential yet overlooked histories visible in our collective consciousness.
The experience is a production by Novaya, a studio dedicated to creating immersive artistic projects that use augmented reality to tell meaningful stories. By bringing together artists, engineers, and producers, Novaya develops virtual and interactive environments where technological innovation is placed in service of powerful narratives. Noire, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, exemplifies this vision, showing how augmented reality and culture can merge to create socially and artistically impactful experiences.
The project, which uniquely blends art and technology, was awarded Best Immersive Work at the 77th Cannes Film Festival.
