RETROSPECTIVE DEDICATED TO GERMAINE DULAC
Her work combines formal experimentation, critical thought and a singular understanding of cinema as an autonomous art form. Over four sessions, we will explore the different facets of her filmography, from abstraction to political commitment. The programme includes her essential works from the avant-garde period, screened on 16 mm; her views on Spanish culture; her musical interventions that function as true avant-la-lettre music videos; and her pioneering video essays, among them the recently recovered Ce qu’il a dit, ce qu’il a fait, which will be shown for the first time in Madrid. A broad and necessary portrait of an author often misunderstood and generally reduced to her surrealist experiments, yet whose extensive body of work, rich in nuance and power, continues to illuminate the vast territory of cinema.
