RETROSPECTIVE OF FILMMAKER LUCÍA SELES

Cineteca Madrid hosts the most comprehensive retrospective dedicated to date in Spain to Lucía Seles, one of the most unclassifiable and fascinating filmmakers of contemporary Argentine cinema. A graphomaniac, musician, actress, and obsessive director of lists, Seles—who also goes by the name Selena Prat and perceives herself as a Chilean poet from Valparaíso—has built a body of work unlike any other. Her films, or "videos" as she prefers to call them, are a genre in themselves: a narrative and human chaos of frenetic editing, where the absurd and the plausible go hand in hand. Her cinema fractures the symbolic order and leaves us without intelligible coordinates. Through abrupt transitions, singular framing, and overlaid commentary in Spanglish, Seles invites the viewer to question perception, communication, and the tyranny of language. The retrospective includes her most recent pieces—many of them previously unreleased in Spain—such as Smog en tu corazón (2022), Saturday Disorders (2022), Weak Rangers (2022), Terminal Young (2023), Fire Supply (2024), Gallega invernal, Avenida Saenz 1073, Rezar como quería, The Urgency of Death (2023), The Bewilderment of Chile (2025), and In the Sentimental Lugo. An essential journey through a body of work that defies any label.

The filmmaker will be present at all sessions.
