The seats of the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris flew through the air in 1913, during the premiere of The Rite of Spring. The public, shaken by a spectacle that was so unlike anything they had ever seen or heard before, and bewildered by the theme, did not hesitate to protest. Sergei Diaghilev, the legendary entrepreneur of the Ballets Russes, had commissioned a young Stravinsky to compose the music for his ballet while on the stage, the choreography had been entrusted to the dancer Nijinsky. On the very night of its premiere, this piece was destined to become a legend.
A century later, the Orchestre National de France and Maestro Daniele Gatti gathered at the same Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris to pay homage to Stravinsky and to premiere this version which was accompanied by illustrations by the Spanish cartoonist Sagar. Five years later, courtesy of the Orchestra of the Teatro Real (Opera House), it will be performed at Naves Matadero.
The original ballet of The Rite of Spring presented the ritual of a pagan tribe that was calling out for the return of spring. The ritual ended with the sacrifice of a young virgin whom the tribe forced to dance until she died of exhaustion. A member of the community in exchange for spring. A life in exchange for more life. On the basis of this central idea, Sagar illustrates a panoramic journey through the evolution of the Earth and humanity, which is projected on a large screen while the orchestra of the Teatro Real (Opera House) interprets Stravinsky’s score.
Sagar is one of Spain’s most important cartoonists and a leading figure in the urban sketchers movement (a group of artists from all over the world who draw the cities they live in, the places they visit and the events they live through). He has published comics for Glénat and Editions Delcourt, two of France’s most important publishers, and his work has been recognized at several festivals. He has also worked in other disciplines such as in the movie adaptation of Chico and Rita by Javier Mariscal or in theatre with La Fura dels Baus. In this Rite of Spring, his drawings invite us to reflect on our place in the Earth's evolution, the metaphor of sacrifice, and the need to die to be reborn.
