In video games, the term spawn is the act of reappearing or being reborn after death or destruction, usually after losing one of your lives. This act, which is repeated continuously during the game, can be understood as a ritual.
Ana Esteve Reig, resident researcher at Medialab Matadero, has collected first-person testimonies from different video game environments that relate and analyse how the act of dying is represented. In this final presentation of her Situated Research 2024-2025, the artist shows works that reflect on the value of life and death in virtual environments, establishing a parallelism with spiritual beliefs, especially those linked to Buddhism. These simulations go from being mere entertainment experiences to displaying other symbolic capacities.
