“There can be no doubt that Socrates is a fundamental figure in Western philosophy. His aura continues to shine, reaching through time to the present day. His search for truth, his investigation through dialogue of morality, honesty, justice and human knowledge – presupposing that we must always begin with a question relating to non-knowledge – made him a unique and, of course, dangerous being, representing a threat to all sorts of hypocrisy, whether individual or collective, even that which is perpetrated by the state or is democratic in nature.   It is this incorruptible fibre that led him – the object of an animosity that was nurtured in silence for over twenty years – to be accused by powerful and treacherous individuals of corrupting the youth and disavowing the official gods. The sentence, which was upheld by his fellow citizens, could not have been more terrible or unjust: death by ingestion of hemlock.”   - Mario Gas.   Sócrates. Juicio y muerte de un ciudadano is a new play by Mario Gas detailing the trial leading to the death of one of the most important philosophers and thinkers in the history of world philosophy.   In the year 399 BC a jury of peers sentenced Socrates to death by hemlock. Although a protest led by his most famous disciple, Plato, tried to secure his release, he himself accepted the sentence handed down to him and opted to carry it out. He is responsible for one of the most famous phrases in the history of philosophy: “I only know that I know nothing.” This aphorism is still in use today, 2,500 years later. Josep Maria Pou portrays Socrates, the brilliant ancient Greek thinker who was condemned to death after denouncing the corruption of his birthplace, Athens, and the excessive moral weight of religion in his era.
