On the occasion of the 20th Anniversary of Sonic, the Hedgehog (June 2011), SEGA and Universidad Nebrija, announced a competition for university students dedicated to the image of the light-footed blue hedgehog, idol to several generations of gamers.
Sonic was born in 1991 and would become the icon of the Sega company. Since then he's been brought to comics, cartoons, and even film, and has millions of fans around the world. In any case, until not long ago, nobody would have thought of comparing a videogame character to a work of art, not until 2009 when the videogame sector in Spain rose to the category of cultural industry- great news for the artists working in this field. This is the premise for the creation of this contest, which serves as a link between academia and the profession world.
The exhibition, visiting Matadero Madrid for six days, will display the 20 best projects presented to the competition by university students as well as the three works selected by its qualified judges. The award winners will receive economic aid in the form of a scholarship and a collection of Sonic videogames.
