Created in 1992 to provide incentives for an emerging movement in new creation in this dance genre, the Spanish Dance and Flamenco Choreography Competition has helped strengthen new flamenco ballet, giving recognition and lending prestige to young choreographers who have taken a chance on enriching Spanish dance and pushing for fusion. It also promotes initiatives in recovery and research on traditional forms, such as the bolero school and new folklore.
Directed by Margaret Jova, previous editions have been held at Teatro Fernan Gomez, Teatro Albéniz and at Teatros del Canal .
Many young creators and dancers representing recent generations' movement in new Spanish dance and flamenco ballet have become established professionally thanks, in part, to success in this competition. Some previous winners and participants are: Ángel Rojas, Carlos Rodriguez, Elvira Andrés, Rafael Amargo, Juan Carlos Lerida and Fernando Romero, just to name a few.
